About the Project

A Custom WordPress Blog for an Author Shaking Up the Status Quo.

Karen Filewych is on a mission to change the world through words. First she had to change the world wide web.

"I appreciated the time taken by MJ to find out my design preferences. The final look of the website reflects my style and the brand I wanted to create. I am also pleased with how easy it is to make content changes to my website which I do on a weekly basis. So happy I chose Awoven Media for the development of my website!"
Karen Filewych,
Words Change Worlds

Edmonton author and educator Karen Filewych has been running her weekly blog Words Change Worlds since 2011. Having just published her second book, Freewriting with Purpose, she felt it was time to move forward from the DIY website and paid blogging platform she’d been working with all that time. She asked Awoven Media to come up with a custom design that would look more professional, adapt to more devices, and bring the Words Change Worlds brand up to modern standards.

Since Karen was already familiar with WordPress and making regular content updates, we decided to build the new site as a fully custom WordPress theme. This allowed for several key advantages: we could effortlessly import all her previous blog posts, craft a memorable and unique design, and give Karen the full suite of editing tools that all authors deserve.

Design-wise, our goals were to keep things clean, simple, and on-brand. We incorporated the smooth blue-green colour gradient of the Words Change Worlds logo throughout the site, and captured the brand’s typewriter-rough aesthetic with a subtle parchment background and the striking ripped paper design of the banner.

Thanks to the flexibility of WordPress plugins, we were able to easily add functionality like blog subscriptions, email notifications, and custom post types like book reviews. As Words Change Worlds grows, we’ll be able to extend this functionality even further with ecommerce integrations, workshop scheduling, and whatever else Karen’s writing calls for. And since Awoven Media is currently hosting and maintaining the new site on our severs, these updates are all just an email away. Words really do change worlds!
